Matt Mullenweg talks about WordPress and open source: "There's a deeper universal truth"

These are some notes I made from the talk by Matt Mullenweg, creator of WordPress, at the Dublin Web Summit. The event MD Mark Little said to begin with that he had read somewhere that Matt's long term aim was to create a movement, and he certainly has.

Converting from a WordPress blog to a vBulletin forum

I decided after an interesting chat with Loren Feldman from 1938 Media earlier this year that this site should move from a blog to a forum. He had recently swapped from WordPress to vBulletin.

I'm a data hoarder, so I had to figure out how to migrate the data. It's not simple, because although vBulletin has a WordPress importer, it's for an old version of WordPress and it's designed to work with the vBulletin Blog system (not for importing into a forum).

So, here are the steps I went through to get it to work.

Content is often syndicated from many blogs, social websites and news services in computer-readable feeds that can be used by other people and systems. For example, content from newspapers is often syndicated so that news headlines can be read by people in their own feed reader programs or integrated into their own websites.

World experts on social networks, blogging and “Web 3.0” come to Cork in March

Cork will play host to the 5th International Conference on Social Software - BlogTalk - from the 2nd to the 4th of March 2008.

The BlogTalk event – see 2008.blogtalk.net - allows practitioners, developers and academics to connect and discuss the latest trends and happenings in the world of social software (blogs, wikis, social networks, etc.). A workshop on the hot topic of "Social Network Portability" will be co-located with the event.

BlogTalk has attracted prominent speakers in the past, and this year is no exception.

Simplified Technorati search

20071130a.png I think I'm probably not alone when I say that Technorati may have put too much in at once when they decided to move from focussing on blogs to many other types of tagged content some time ago.

Luckily, they also implemented a stripped-down version for those who remember and just want to use Technorati as a "Google for blogs".

Hospital in Paris, Texas tries to issue legal suit against anonymous critical blogger

From the Houston Chronicle, we read of a case in Paris, Texas where a defamation lawsuit has been filed by a hospital there to reveal the identity of a blogger who has been severely critical of the hospital and their practices:

A state district judge has told lawyers for the hospital and the blogger that he plans within a week to order a Dallas Internet service provider to release the blogger's name.

Nintendo Contract Employee Fired Over Blog That Was "Not Work Appropriate"

Jessica Zenner, an employee of Parker Services (a technical recruitment contractor for Nintendo) was fired on the 31st of August by her employer following concerns expressed by Nintendo about posts on her blog "Inexcusable Behavior".

On the blog, where she talks about herself, her friends and co-workers (none of whom are mentioned by name), Zenner used the identity "Jessica Carr" but did not explicitly refer to her employers. The entries leading up to the firing have since been removed from the site, and there have been many requests to have the archives restored (one of the original posts is quoted at techdigest.tv).

A comment on her blog by Orin O'Neill is extremely critical of Nintendo and the move:

A tale of two Atoms: AtomPub and Atom Interface

Two articles about two different technologies both bearing the name Atom caught my attention recently.

Call opens for BlogTalk 2008, the social software conference

BlogTalk 2008, the 5th International Conference on Social Software, has today published its call for proposals for the event which will be held in Cork, Ireland on the 3rd and 4th of March next year.
